Israeli president Reuven Rivlin commended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for joining the calls for a national unity government. He was speaking at a memorial ceremony for former president Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Thursday.
"I hear, loud and clear, the voices calling for a broad and stable national unity government and I congratulate you, Mr. Prime Minister [Benjamin Netanyahu], on joining that call this morning. The responsibility for making it happen falls to you, elected officials, especially the leaders of the major parties," said Rivlin.
The comments came after Netanyahu called on his main rival Benny Gantz to form a unity cabinet after Israel's second general election in less than a year failed to produce a clear winner. The two politicians were seen shaking hands at the ceremony.
The latest results show that Benny Gantz's Blue and White bloc is leading by two seats with 33 out of 120 seats in the Knesset at 97% of the vote counted.
