At least four people have been killed and more than 100 injured after a suicide bomber targeted the German embassy in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of the northern Balkh province of Afghanistan, Friday. Abdul Razaq Qaderi, the local police chief, said that three police officers were among those injured.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, with spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid describing Germany as "the invader," adding that the attack was in "revenge" for German assistance in a US airstrike in Kundu, in a statement released to German media.
In a statement the German Foreign Ministry stated that "All German employees of the consulate-general are safe and unharmed," adding that "Our sympathies go out to the Afghans who were wounded and to the friends and families of the victims."
