Moneymaking monkeys from Lopburi were in for a treat on Sunday, as the local Monkey Banquet Festival got underway at the city’s Phra Prang Sam Yot shrine.
The annual festival, which takes over the town and sees the animals gorging on bananas and other fruits, is organised by locals as a way of rewarding the long-tail macaque monkeys who bring tourism to the area.
The event was attended by hundreds of people, some in disbelief at just how cheeky the monkeys could be. One tourist stated that "the monkeys are crazy, they stole my water bottle and they didn't want to give it back!” Another visitor had to cut short his interview after a monkey began crawling on his head.
The festival went ahead despite the fact that the country is in mourning for the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died aged 88 at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital on Thursday, October 13.
