Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that the newly relaunched Turkish Stream project would likely be finished by 2019, during a meeting in Moscow on Monday.
The Gazprom boss said "in accordance with the intergovernmental agreement, we will construct two offshore pipes under the Black Sea to Turkey." He predicted that "both pipes will be finished by the end of 2019.Taking into account the preparatory work that was done."
In terms of levels of supply Miller said the two pipes would have "a capacity totalling 31.5 billion cubic meters of gas", one "with a capacity of 15 billion 750 million cubic metres, will supply the Turkish market" and the other pipeline "will deliver gas to the European consumers."
The size of the project is huge but likely to be streamlined as permits for the abandoned South Stream pipeline "are equally valid for the Turkish Stream project". The CEO said: "we have already obtained permission to launch front-end engineering on a section within the Turkish economic zone in the Black Sea," going on to state that this section stretches "250 kilometres from the border of the Turkish and Bulgarian economic zones towards Turkey."
Putin announced the project in 2014 as a replacement for the South Stream which failed due to EU regulations. A deal was signed on the Turkish Stream by Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the World Energy Congress in Istanbul on October 10.
