A moments silence was observed at the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Ulaanbaatar, Friday, following the news that at least 84 people had been killed after a truck drove through a crowd in Nice the previous evening.
Among the attendees were President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the meeting was being chaired by Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.
According to witnesses of the attack, the truck drove into the crowd of spectators who were watching the Bastille Day fireworks display. The truck was reportedly loaded with weapons and grenades. The driver, who has been reported as being French of Tunisian origin, was shot and killed by security forces after driving 2 kilometres (1.24 miles) into the crowd.
French President Francois Hollande announced the extension of the State of Emergency currently in effect in France, during a press conference from Paris, in the early hours of Friday. "I have also decided that the State of Emergency that was supposed to end on the 26th of July, will continue for another three months. Parliament will discuss the measure next week. Nothing will stop us from our intention to fight terrorism, and we will continue our operations in Syria and Iraq," stated Hollande.
