Dozens of protester gathered outside the Egyptian embassy in Rome, Monday, calling on the Egyptian authorities to provide more evidence regarding the death of the Italian PhD student Julio Regeni. On Friday last week Italy recalled their ambassador from Cairo, after the Egyptian authorities failed provide what the Italians consider enough evidence on the case.
The demonstrators carried placards reading "Justice" and "Truth for Giulio Regeni", "Truth for Giulio Regeni" as well as "Freedom for Shawkan and all the other prisoners of conscience. Justice for all the disappeared people of Egypt". Many protesters wore gags over their mouths.
Regeni went missing on 25th January. He was found dead, nine days later, on an overpass in the outskirts of Cairo. His body was found half-naked and showing signs of torture and cigarette burns. Following an initial autopsy in the Egyptian capital, Regeni's body was taken back to Rome for a second post-mortem. The cause of death is still undetermined.
The 28-year-old PhD student had travelled to Cairo from Cambridge University in order to research the formation of independent trade unions in post-Mubarak Egypt.
