Hundreds of political activists and foreign nationals gathered outside the Italian embassy in Cairo to mourn the death of Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni, on Saturday. Mourners lit candles, laid flowers and held signs reading ""Resist for Giulio!! Resist!!"
Regeni went missing on 25th January. He was found dead, nine days later, on an overpass in the outskirts of Cairo. His body was found half-naked and showing signs of torture and cigarette burns. Following an initial autopsy in the Egyptian capital, Regeni's body was taken back to Rome for a second post-mortem. The cause of death is still undetermined.
The 28-year-old PhD student had travelled to Cairo from Cambridge University in order to research the formation of independent trade unions in post-Mubarak Egypt.
