German Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maiziere gave an address on the Taliban attack at a German General Consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, in Berlin, Friday.
The minister stated that the attack was "brutal" and "not just a suicide attack" but one in which the attacker or attackers attempted "to enter the property and to kill more people."
De Maiziere expressed that it was "extremely fortunate" that no German employees had been killed, thanking the Afghan security forces “who looked out for the security of their German colleagues.”
Six Afghans were killed in the attack and over 100 injured. De Maiziere expressed his condolences over the loss of life, stating “We mourn these deaths and feel for their loved ones.
The Taliban declared the attack as a response to US air strikes this month in the northern city of Kunduz. The Germans and Afghans are working together and have already arrested one suspect in the bombing, Saied Sadat, on Friday morning.
