A rally of reportedly around 120 neo-Nazis was met by up to 10,000 left-wing counter-demonstrators in the German city of Kassel on Saturday.
The far-right group were protesting what they call media prejudice against those with right-wing politics, according to local media. They accuse the media of instrumentalising the murder of local politician Walter Luebcke, who was assassinated last month. An alleged neo-Nazi extremist confessed to the killing of the Merkel ally but later retracted his statement via a lawyer.
Participants of the counter-protest held up photographs of Luebcke and banners calling for unity and denouncing racism, while ‘Die Rechte’ supporters were seen holding nationalist flags and marching through the streets of the city. Minor scuffles broke out between left-wing protesters and police, who kept the two groups separate.
Some 31 people were reportedly temporarily detained or taken into custody by the police during the rally, which coincided with the 75th anniversary of a failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler.
