Russia: One-sided fulfillment of ceasefire deems Geneva deal 'meaningless' - Ministry of Defence

"The United States and the groups of the so-called moderate opposition controlled by them did not fulfil any of the commitments undertaken in the framework of the Geneva agreements," said Lieutenant General Sergei Rudskoi at a press briefing at the Russian Ministry of Defence in Moscow, Monday.
According to Rudskoi, since the conditions of the cessation of hostilities have not been met by the opposition group, the one-sided fulfilment of it by the Syrian government forces is "meaningless."
Rudskoi noted that "the break of the moderate opposition from the Jabhat al-Nusra has not taken place," while pointing out to its "merging" and "preparation for a joint offensive." According to Rudskoi, "the reason for the created situation is that the United States do not have an effective leverage over the moderate opposition and do not know the real situation on the ground."
General Rudskoi also reported that "within the past 24 hours, the number of attacks by the armed groups reached 53. Since the announcement of the cessation of hostilities, it has been violated by the opposition 302 times. During this period, 63 civilians were killed and 252 were wounded while the losses of the Syrian armed forces reached 153."
The United States and Russia agreed on a renewed ceasefire plan in Syria on September 9, following marathon talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry in Geneva.
The 48 hour ceasefire in Syria was due to commence on September 12 and was deemed to be the first step in what could be a week-long truce throughout the country negotiated by Kerry and Lavrov. The package of five documents was believed to establish the cessation of hostilities and promote the resumption of the political process in Syria. It was given the consent of the Syrian government and anti-government militias fighting in the country. However, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as Jahbat al-Nusra before their break with al-Qaeda, and the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) were not included in the ceasefire.
