UK: Hundreds of pro-refugee protesters march on Downing Street

12.11.2015
Over 500 pro-refugee protesters marched on London's Downing Street, Thursday, to decry British Prime Minister David Cameron's policy on migrants and asylum seekers. Organised by the protest group 'Stand up to Racism,' the demonstrators carried anti-fascist banners and signs bearing the message "Refugees are welcome here." Joint secretary of Unite against Fascism Weyman Bennett hit out at Britain's "crime against humanity," calling Cameron to task for his alleged complicity in the number of migrant deaths along EU borders. Cameron has voiced his pride in the fact that the UK has provided sanctuary for around 5,000 Syrian refugees who have managed to make their way to Britain through Europe and Calais, while vowing to allow thousands more into the country. Comparatively, Germany took 65,000 refugees in 2014 alone. Only 216 refugees were accepted in Britain's official relocation programme by September. Cameron remains opposed to the quota system of refugee and migrant relocation being pushed through by the EU, as "it can encourage people to make the journey."
