24.06.2016
Leader of the French National Front party Marie Le Pen called for a referendum in her own country on France’s EU membership following the results of the Brexit victory in the UK, making the comments during a press conference at the party’s HQ in Paris, Thursday.
She stated that despite that the suggestion that British trade opportunities in Europe would be damaged by Brexit, she insisted that Britain would be able to continue to trade with the Europe even more effectively.
The right-wing leader continued to discuss the possibility of France holding their own referendum on French EU membership, calling the French public opinion on the matter a ‘democratic necessity’. Le Pen said that if she was given the opportunity, she would hold a referendum following a six month negotiation period with the EU. She insisted that if negotiations are successful or if the France decided to leave the EU, a better Europe would emerge; 'a Europe of nations'.
On Friday morning the Electoral Commission reported that the Leave campaign had clinched a win, with some 52 percent of the electorate voting for Brexit from an estimated 72 percent voter turnout. London and Scotland polled predominantly for remain, but every English region outside the capital voted in a majority to leave the EU.
With the pound plummeting to its lowest value since 1985 following the results, the Bank of England has stated that 'all necessary steps' will be taken to maintain Britain's financial stability.
Shortly after the official results were announced British Prime Minister David Cameron stated that he would resign as the country’s leader before the autumn during an address from Downing Street after being an integral part of the remain campaign.
