Have no fear, Nutella lovers: your favorite breakfast spread may not be hurting the environment after all.
France ecology minister Ségolène Royal is backtracking and apologizing for comments that she made late on Monday night on French TV network Canal+ that claimed the beloved hazelnut and chocolate spread, produced by Italian brand Ferrero, contributed to deforestation.
“We have to replant a lot of trees because there is massive deforestation that also leads to global warming,” Royal said during the Canal+ interview. “We should stop eating Nutella, for example, because it’s made with palm oil.”
Nutella is beloved in France, where it is a staple of fast-food crepe stands and family breakfasts.
