19.06.2016
Dozens of people took part in a reburial ceremony of 14 former slaves on Saturday at the St Agnes Cemetery, Albany, New York.
Hearses brought the caskets of the former slaves to cemetery, from where pallbearers carried them to the reburial site. Members from local Christian and African-American communities then provided eulogies at the ceremony.
The gravestone marking their burial site read "Here lies the remains of 14 souls known only to god. Enslaved in life they are slaves no more."
The reburial was organised by The Schuyler Flatts Burial Project, in order to provide dignified and respectful burial for the skeletons of 14 former slaves, which were unearthed in June 2005 during construction work in the town of Colonie, Albany.
