Around 500 refugees, predominantly from Syria and Eritrea, were assisted with water and food by volunteers at the Milan Central Station on Thursday, after arriving in the Northern Italian city following their dangerous journey from Northern Africa. The charity Fondazione Progetto Arca Onlus gave out food and bottles of water to the migrants, many who are currently sleeping rough at the station after coming from the south to Italy's north in search of shelter. The arrival of the migrants follows a wave of people, many from conflict zones, trying to enter Italy and other southern European states from Northern Africa, a journey which costs each migrant thousands of Euros and can be severely dangerous. At least 1,800 people have reportedly died trying to make the Mediterranean crossing into Europe since the start of the year. Over 40,400 migrants have arrived via boat in Italy since the beginning of 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration, with numbers increasing rapidly in the past two weeks.
