At least eight people died after a car bomb, reportedly driven by a suicide bomber exploded at a checkpoint outside the residence of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in Aden, Thursday. An affiliate of the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack, which left at least 10 people injured.
The blast is the latest in a series of incidents over the past months that have targetted the city, which was announced as the provisional capital of Yemen by Hadi, after the fall of Sanaa to the Houthi opposition in September 2014.
Hadi himself was reported to be inside the Maashiq palace at the time of the explosion, which occurred around 500 metres (1,640 feet) from the building. The majority of the casualties are reported to be civilians.
