UN: 'A complete turnaround' - former OPCW inspector slams Douma attack report

Former Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) inspector Ian Henderson denounced the final OPCW report into the alleged 2018 chemical weapons attack in the Syrian town of Douma, during a video address to members of the United Nations Security Council in New York City on Monday.
"The findings in the final FMM [Fact-Finding Mission] report were contradictory, were a complete turnaround with what the team had understood collectively," he said.
He stated that by the time of the release of the interim report, in July 2018, his understanding was that there were serious misgivings that a chemical attack had occurred.
"The report did not make clear what new findings, facts, information, data or analysis in the fields of witness testimony, toxicology studies, chemical analysis, and engineering and/or ballistic studies [came to light], and resulted in a complete turnaround in the situation from what was understood by the majority of the team and the entire Douma team in July 2018," he stated.
"In my case I had followed up with a further six months of engineering and ballistic studies into the cylinders, the result of which had provided further support for the view that there had not been a chemical attack," he added.
The expert had to issue a video address to the UNSC members since his visa application to attend the session was reportedly denied.
The Security Council meeting was called for by Russian Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya to discuss the report prepared by the OPCW into the alleged chemical attack on Douma in 2018. The US, France and the UK launched joint strikes against Syria after blaming the Syrian government for the incident.
