25.06.2016
Dozens of right-wing protesters marched through downtown Bucharest, Saturday, demanding an amendment to the constitution preventing any same-sex marriage bills from being passed.
Protesters with Orthodox crosses, placards and banners walked through the Bucharest streets, chanting slogans including "Romania is an Orthodox country" and "Romania does not tolerate sodomy". One of the organisers of the protest, the president of the New Right Party Tudor Ionescu said that the protest was aimed to support "the institution of the traditional Christian family" and to express disagreement with "gay marriages, which are demanded this year very explicitly".
This march is a counter protest to the traditional Diversity Parade in Bucharest, which gathers thousands of gay activists and their supporters.
Recently, at least 3,000,000 Romanian citizens joined the initiative of Romanian Orthodox church, called 'Coalition for Family' and signed the petition for banning gay marriage. The petition is already submitted to the government and supposed to be considered in Romanian Constitutional Court.
According to the statistics, around 90 per cent of Romanians are Christians.
