Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi stated that he doesn't believe "that there is a need to bring sanctions" against Russia, as he was briefed at the end of the first day of the EU Council meeting in Brussels in the early hours of Friday.
"With respect to Syria we are all very worried and we approved a document that recalls the exigence to reach as soon as possible an agreement and a real truce to allow the process of political transition that we are all waiting for," Renzi stated, but stressed that "I don't think that there is a need to bring sanctions on the table in this context."
Renzi said that the leaders were able to agree on a document, which "agrees on the fact that we need to exercise all possible pressures for an agreement in Syria" but that "it's difficult to imagine that this could be done through additional sanctions against Russia."
