Police made four arrests and reportedly left one man with a broken leg at an unauthorised rally held in solidarity with victims of the Orlando shooting in Florida, after participants clashed with police officers in New York City, Sunday.
An initial vigil was held outside the historical Stonewall Inn and was followed by a march to Union Square, before an unauthorised march continued to Time Square until broken up by mounted police officers.
Police detained four of the solidarity marchers and allegedly broke one of the marchers leg after throwing him down to the floor during the arrest.
Fifty people were killed and 53 injured in a shooting at the LGBT nightclub 'Pulse' in Orlando on Sunday, with Mayor Buddy Dyer confirming the numbers during a press briefing later in the day. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11.
Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the culprit. He was killed during the SWAT operation at the club.
Mateen reportedly claimed links to the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) before carrying out the attack, but officials have stated that the militant group's relations with the individual could be tenuous.
