Over 40 years of British industrial history and cement production were nullified with dignity, on Sunday, as hundreds gathered on the hills near Westbury, Wiltshire, to witness a 122-metre (400 feet) chimney go down in a controlled explosion.
People started already gathering on the demolition scene hours before the explosion, and at 07:00 am local time (06:00 GMT) the iconic chimney was destroyed with 216 charges packed with nitroglycerine.
The Westbury cement works chimney was built in the early 1960s, and operated as part of the town’s cement production industry until 2009.
