Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto defended the government's decision to erect a border fence on the Serbian border, saying a "physical obstable" is the "only way" to protect the country, in Budapest on Thursday. The Hungarian-Serbian border is "175-kilometres long, out of which 155 kilometres" is easily crossed, Szijjarto said, before insisting that the majority of those fleeing to Europe are "economic migrants" and not refugees. According to Szijjarto, in order to solve the crisis the European Union "should financially assist Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and other countries around Syria to maintain camps" and "infrastructure." "We cannot bear the burden of accepting economic migrants in the country," he concluded. Over 201,000 migrants and refugees have entered Hungary in 2015, resulting in the government implementing legislation to control the border by arresting anyone crossing it without documentation.
