Ukraine: Delta Bank depositors protest outside Kiev's Cabinet of Ministers

03.09.2015
People who held accounts and deposited money at Ukraine's Delta Bank before it went bankrupt earlier this year protested in front of Cabinet of Ministers in Kiev, on Thursday to demand bank nationalisation and that their payments are returned. Several hundred people blocked Grushevskogo Street in central Kiev holding banners and blowing whistles. Traffic along the street was paralysed. The protest was held peacefully - there were no reports of injuries or arrests, while National Guard officers and policemen cordoned off the parliamentary building. According to Fund Deposit Guarantee, eight billion Ukrainian hryvnias or $362 million (€322 million) have already been paid to depositors - around 60 percent of the total amount guaranteed. The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) declared Delta Bank insolvent on March 2 and stated that six percent of the country's retails deposits were held with the bank. Founded in 2006, it was the fourth biggest bank in Ukraine in terms of assets worth $247 billion (€220 billion).
