A recently discovered ruin complex at the archaeological site of Aguada Fenix in the Mexican state of Tabasco has been identified as a 3,000-year-old ceremonial centre belonging to the Mayan culture, according to the specialised magazine Nature.
An aerial view of the site released on Wednesday shows that the ceremonial complex also includes a four-metre high pyramid. The site was practically at ground level, only covered by vegetation.
According to local press reports, experts estimate that at least 5,000 people were needed to build the complex over a period of time that would reach six years of work.
Experts estimate that the ceremonial centre was built around 1,000 B.C., by a culture that was a precursor of the Mayan civilisation.
