Press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign Sarah McBride made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to speak at the Democratic National Convention and indeed any big convention of a major US political party on Thursday.
McBride opened her speech with the statement: "My name is Sarah McBride and I am a proud transgender American." The human rights advocate went on to speak about Clinton's understanding of the LGBTQIA struggle: "Hillary Clinton understands the urgency of our fight. She'll work with us to pass the Equality Act, to combat violence against transgendered women of colour and to end the AIDS/HIV epidemic once and for all."
McBride ended on a note of support for the Democratic nominee: "tomorrow we can be respected and protected, especially if Hillary Clinton is our president and that's why I'm proud to stand here and say that I'm with her. Thank you all very much."
The 2016 Democratic National Convention was held at the Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Centre and concluded on July 28.
