The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution imposing sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in New York, Wednesday. The decision came two months after Pyongyang's nuclear test and a month after an alleged missile launch, despite a ban on all nuclear-related activity.
According to the official statement of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, "today's unanimous action by the Security Council has sent a clear message that the DPRK must return to full compliance with its international obligations."
Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin commented on the sanctions calling them to be "quite harsh." However, he continued, "the resolution leaves open the possibility to the DPRK to return to the six-party process, which should be urgently restarted," adding that "sanctions in this case are not the goal, rather means."
The new sanctions stipulate a ban on all exports and supply of all types of aviation fuel, including rocket fuel, as well as an asset freeze on all funds and other economic resources owned or controlled by the DPRK government or by the Worker's Party of Korea.
