Greece: Desperate refugees continued to be pulled ashore in Lesbos

30.10.2015
Refugees continued to arrive on the shoes of Lesbos on Thursday, just one day after a vessel sank near the Greek Island, carrying at least 300 people. Many people arrived on the shores of Skala Sikaminias, north of the island, many of whom were floating on dinghies in the sea for hours, waiting for the wind to bring them to the coast. The vessels were hauled in with the help of volunteers who then gave out food and dry clothes. Once on shore, many refugees used their lifejackets to make a fire on the beach to stay warm before registering at various camps stationed around the island. On Wednesday a vessel carrying at least 300 sank in gale-force winds. While the Greek Coast Guard reported it rescued 242 people from the vessel, at least 11 people have died and dozens are missing.
