A South African humanitarian organization says it has begun efforts to negotiate the release of two hostages who have been held in Mali for three years.
Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of the South African group Gift of the Givers, said on Thursday they are trying to negotiate with the captors of South African Stephen Malcolm McGowan and Swedish citizen Johan Gustafsson. Last month a video was released showing Gustafsson and McGowan appealing to their governments to negotiate for their release. Gustafsson and McGowan were abducted in November 2011 in Timbuktu in northern Mali.
