Finland: Neo-Nazis and anti-fascists clash on Independence Day in Helsinki
4
06.12.2018
Dueling protest marches were kept apart by police in Helsinki on Thursday, as neo-Nazis and counter protesters took to the streets on Finnish Independence Day.
Around 300 people, including swastika flag-waving members of the Finnish branch of the neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) and members of the anti-immigrant Soldiers of Odin group, were outnumbered by some 2,0000 anti-facist protesters in the city centre.
Footage shows police intervening to stop the march and to confiscate flags with swastika symbols on them, as well as forcibly detaining protesters.
Finnish courts have banned the NRM, which also has offshoots in Norway and Sweden, on the grounds that it encourages violent acts by its members.
