The UN Security Council will formally confirm its next Secretary General on Thursday, October 6, in New York.
The former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is poised to be elected for the position, replacing the South Korean Ban Ki-moon, who led the organisation during the last decade.
Guterres, 66, who for ten years was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, over his tenure he dealt with the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War.
On October 5 Guterres was encouraged by the backing of 13 of the 15 UN Security Council members, during the sixth secret straw poll led by the organisation since the voting started last April. The official choice is now only a formal vote away to be announced.
