GoPro footage captured adventurer Sonya Baumstein preparing for her 6,000-mile (9,656-km) solo rowing trip from Japan to San Francisco near Choshi on Wednesday. If the 30 year old completes the feat, she will be the first woman to complete the crossing. On her custom 23-foot-long (7 metres), 775-pound (350 kg) boat, Baumstein will take with her 180 high-carbohydrate drink supplements, 1,200 pounds (544 kg) of freeze-dried food and an electric water desalinator. She will also have with her a satellite phone which she intends to use to share sea data with Seattle-based nonprofit Earth & Space Research (ESR). Born and raised in Orlando, Florida, Baumstein holds the title of first woman to stand up paddle the Bering Strait from Big Diomede to just north of Wales, Alaska. She has also previously rowed from the Canaries to Barbados and kayaked from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska.
