02.08.2016
Footage released on Tuesday shows Aleppo residents and anti-government militants who have laid down their arms escaping the eastern part of the city through the Sheikh Saad gate. Ambulances and aid trucks were present to help as part of a series of humanitarian corridors set up by Russian and Syrian authorities to demilitarise the area and move civilians further from the intensified fighting.
One man with a covered face who described himself as "leader of a military group" said he regretted getting involved with the military, with another surrendering militant thanking God "the president announced amnesty." One Aleppo resident described the conditions before escaping the rebel-held city, saying "we came hungry and thirsty" and accused the rebels of "taking all the food, not giving anything to our children."
Three routes were set up on 20 July. Those using these to leave Aleppo are being provided with accommodation in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, and supplied with food and medical assistance.
Much of the Aleppo remains in the hands of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, the former Al-Qaida affiliated militia previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front), amongst other anti-government groups.
