Switzerland: Morales accuses Chile of human rights violations

23.09.2016
Bolivian President Evo Morales stated that Chile was “violating the human rights of Bolivians” as he took to the stage at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday to raise a long standing dispute between Bolivia and Chile concerning access to the Pacific Ocean.
According to Morales, Bolivian transporters, carrying goods or people, have to “wait for days” at the Chilean border, enduring the cold and “a lack of food and basic services”. He believes this is due to the neighbouring country’s bureaucratic measures, which are causing “a very sensitive problem” between the two countries. Chile is yet to reply to Morales’ most recent statements, but is expected to take to the floor later in the day in order to do so.
The dispute between Bolivia and Chile over access to the Pacific Ocean goes back as far as the early 19th century. Recently the two nations have filed legal proceedings against each other at the UN’s highest court, the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
