Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Middle East region had become a “territory of chaos and a base for international terrorism,” at an informal meeting of the BRICS-nations leaders on the side-lines of the G20 summit in Hangzhou on Sunday.
Putin said of the Russian air force's campaign in Syria, that it had “facilitated a very serious blow against the terrorists and their infrastructure, to preserve Syrian national identity.” He also slammed “civil wars which were triggered from the outside, and the disintegration of the government in Iraq ... [and] Libya.” The Russian president said that the interventions had led to “the expansion of IS, and extremists of literally all stripes united under the IS flag, have become a real challenge to security.”
The G20 summit, held between September 4 and 5 in Hangzhou, sees governments and representatives from 20 major economic powers meet and discuss strategies for fiscal policy and international financial stability.
