South Korea's Foreign Ministry and the Joint Chiefs of Staff summoned the Russian and Chinese military attaches over a reported joint-military operation that allegedly saw a Russian A-50 aircraft twice violate the country's airspace over the Sea of Japan.
Footage from the visit shows Russian Deputy Military Attache Nikolai Marchenko and Assistant of the Military Attache Sergey A. Balazhigitov arriving at the Joint Chiefs of Staff building, with Marchenko saying: "The Russian [Federation] never threatened the Republic of Korea, it's very important."
After his visit, the Chinese Defence Attache to South Korea Du Nong Yi also refuted Seoul's claims by saying: "Air recognition area is not airspace."
According to reports, three Russian military planes, two Tu-95 bombers and one A-50 aircraft, along with two Chinese H-6 bombers entered South Korea's air defence identification zone off its east coast before the A-50 passed into South Korean airspace twice with domestic fighter jets scrambling and reportedly firing 360 rounds of warning shots.
