More than 2,000 protesting farmers departed Heraklion in Crete on Thursday in order to meet thousands more farmers from all over Greece at their mutual gathering point, in Athens on Friday in order to protest against the new measures, insurance and taxation laws that are being imposed.
Priamos Ieronimakis, president of farmers union organising the strike, stated that farmers "can't survive anymore" as "the taxes for our equipment and products is at 26%." Another farmer present at the Heraklion port said that politicians "cannot understand our struggle because they are rich."
The wave of protests started in January, when the Greek parliament voted in favour of a new round of economic reforms, affecting taxes, pension plans, and a series of public sector cutbacks. The new measures will affect wages in the public sector and will lead to overhauls of the banking system. Once implemented the Greek government will receive €1 billion ($1.1 billion) from its lenders.
