Fairground workers set up burning barricades in Rouen on Tuesday, causing traffic chaos in the northern French city. The protesters were voicing their anger at the fact that their fairs are being set up further and further from city centres. The protest began when local authorities informed fairground operators that their traditional Foire St Romain fair – the second biggest in France – would not be held at its usual river bank location. The municipality justified the decision on safety grounds. The protest was echoed across France with demonstrations in Calais, Arras, Lille, Saint-Quentin and Charleville-Mezieres as well as Rouen.
