“We are all a little bit surprised”, Matthias Mueller the CEO of Volkswagen, said about Republican Donald Trump being US President-elect, during the Handelsblatt Automotive Summit, in Munich on Wednesday.
However Mueller seemed to remain optimistic, adding that global companies “are used to being confronted by these kinds of situations” and can adapt. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Daimler, Dieter Zetsche, appeared to share this view, stating that a “campaign only gives a limited insight into what can be expected later”, and that he will keep an open mind. However whilst their BMW counterpart, Harald Krueger, acknowledged that it may be “too early to tell” what is going to happen during a Trump presidency, he also expressed his concern that companies “need frameworks for free global trade.”
During his campaign Trump vowed to go back on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), claiming it was a bad deal.
