Spain: PSOE lift veto to allow minority government led by Rajoy

President of the Management Committee of Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), Javier Fernandez, held a press conference at the PSOE headquarters in Madrid, Sunday, where he confirmed that the party had voted to lift a longstanding veto that prevented the conservative Popular Party from forming a minority government.
Fernandez reported that "out of 235 votes, 139 were in favour of the proposition, which I will read. 96 votes were against. That means 59,1 percent were in favour [of the proposition] and 40,8 percent were against it."
The lifting of the veto will now allow a minority government to be formed by the acting prime minister Marino Rajoy.
During his address, Fernandez expressed that the party aims at "developing the contents of this resolution and unblocking the exceptional institutional situation from which the country has been suffering."
Earlier this year, PSOE's former leader Pedro Sanchez sparked opposition in his party over his continued refusal to abstain on confidence votes called by Rajoy. Sanchez' continued directive for his party to vote against a Rajoy-led coalition government could push the country into a third election, which may take place in December, since it deprives Rajoy of the necessary voting majority in parliament to form a government.
