Syria: Kurdish forces hand over custody of 4 children from IS families to Germany

SOT, Fanar al-Kaeet, Foreign Relations Official for Kurdish Authorities (Arabic): "The representative of the Head of the Consulates Department in German ministry of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Noja visited north-east Syria, and was handed over four German children. The delivery of the children took place at a border post. She promised us during the discussions to visit the region again in order to be handed over a larger number of children. The ages of the children are not accurately known to me. The children's ages range from six months to ten years. Unfortunately, some of them -like the infant- are in poor health. Yes, they are orphans. We asked [the representative] to use Germany's prominent prestige and its relations with [other] countries so that other countries can take the same initiative, to come to north-east of Syria and take those children. For the children who suffer humanitarianly speaking they are brought up in a very bad environment. Yes, as for Germany this is the first step, we hope more steps will be made in the future."

The custody of four orphaned German children whose families were part of the Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syira was transferred from Syrian-Kurdish authorities to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Semalka border crossing with Iraq on Monday.
The children are a boy, two girls and a 6-month-old baby who is reportedly in poor health. The infants were among IS families who surrendered after the US backed Syria Defence Forces (SDF) defeated IS in March.
This is the first occasion Germany has repatriated IS children into custody from Syria. Fanar al-Kaeet, a Foreign Relations Official for Kurdish forces, hopes for more exchanges like that to happen in the future.
