Taiwan: Thousands join annual anti-nuclear protest in Taipei

Thousands hit the streets of Taipei on Saturday in an annual protest against nuclear energy, demanding the government to shut the country's nuclear facilities and to abandon its plans to ship nuclear waste abroad.
Earlier, state-run Taiwan Power Co. announced that it might have to close down two of its oldest plants earlier than scheduled due to capacity shortages and are therefore considering shipping 1,200 used nuclear fuel rods abroad.
Environmental groups accuse the company of seeking ways to keep the plants alive, with many protesters wearing fancy-dress guises while holding signs such as "No Nukes, no Fukushima" and "Taiwan is my country," among others.
