Three women wearing burqas have been shot dead by the police in Mombasa, Kenya, on Sunday after launching an attack on a police station.
The women reportedly walked into the station pretending that one of their mobile phones had been stolen. Whilst being questioned, one drew a knife and another threw a petrol bomb, setting the station on fire. According to a witness called Saumu, who spoke to Agence France-Presse, the attackers shouted “Allahu Akbar” – meaning ‘God is greatest’ in Arabic.
Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar, referenced the significance of the suspected terrorist attack on the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11, "We urge our security machinery not to relent, because if you look at this day, it is also a symbolic day when it comes to international terrorism. This is 9/11. So the nexus we draw with this attack is the global nature of terrorism: that today’s 9/11 and they’re trying to remind us."
Mombasa, which lies on the south eastern coast of Kenya, has a large Muslim population and has been targeted by the Islamist militants in recent years. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
