Germany: Sec. Gen Kramp-Karrenbauer wins first round of CDU party leadership vote

Christian Democractic Union (CDU) Secretary General Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer won the first round of voting for the position as the CDU leader, during the party’s conference in Hamburg on Friday.
Angela Merkel received a ten-minute standing ovation in Hamburg before the voting proceedings for her successor as the Christian Democrat leader got underway.
CDU Secretary General Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, businessman Friedrich Merz, and Health Minister Jens Spahn are running to take the position Merkel held for the last 18 years.
In 999 valid votes, Anne Kramp-Karrenbauer received 45 percent of the vote, Friedrich Merz 39 percent and Jens Spahn 15 percent of the corresponding vote.
