A court hearing of five men suspected of having affiliations with the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), continued at the Federal Court in Karlsruhe on Wednesday.
Five suspects - an Iraqi, a Turk, a German, a Serbian-German dual citizen and a national of Cameroon - are accused of recruiting fighters for IS. Thirty-two-year-old Abu Walaa, who is suspected of being a key figure in the operation, was the first to appear in court. A further two suspects will reportedly be ordered to speak in front of the judge on the same day.
The prosecution accuses the group of smuggling a man and his family into Syria so he could fight in an IS-controlled area. The network allegedly reached out to potential recruits during religious lessons, where they provided attendees with 'radical Islamic' materials.
German police arrested the five men in Hildesheim during a raid in several apartments in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia the previous day.
