Drone footage captured Idomeni refugee camp, located on the Greek-Macedonian border, on the first day of an operation launched by Greek authorities to clear and dismantle the camp, Tuesday.
Thousands of refugees had to collect their belongings and board on buses provided by Greek authorities. Over 400 riot police entered the camp, although there have not been any reports of violence. However, journalists and activists have been banned from entering the site.
A reported 12,000 refugees are stranded at the Idomeni camp, on the border between Greece and Macedonia. In April, Greek officials distributed leaflets urging the refugees to abandon the camp and head towards Thessaloniki, where they will be transferred to new camps with better facilities.
Greek authorities reportedly aim to settle at least 4,500 people at four camps located in Oraiokastro and Kaloxori, which constitutes just under half of those currently residing at Idomeni. The new camps are still in the process of being set up.
