Portugal: Taxi drivers clash with police at Lisbon anti-Uber protest

10.10.2016
Thousands of taxi drivers took part in a protest against the expansion of Uber's taxi ride sharing app in Lisbon, Monday, bringing the roads leading to the capital's airport to a standstill.
The protesters blocked the transport routes to the airport by parking their cars on the road, forcing travellers who wanted to reach the airport to either continue by foot or use public transportation. Scuffles and clashes broke out between the protesters and police officers during the protest, and reportedly three cab drivers were arrested. Cab drivers also reportedly targetted their protest at non-protesting taxi drivers and their passengers.
Portuguese taxi operators want the app blocked entirely, saying Uber and similar companies operate outside of the law. The Portuguese government is seeking to regulate the use of ride-sharing apps.
Over the last two years Uber has become one of the most popular ride-sharing applications for mobile platforms across the world.
