Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump made a formal apology in a televised statement from Wisconsin, Friday, after footage from 2005 was leaked capturing the former 'Apprentice' host-cum-politician sexually bragging and making vulgar remarks about women.
Trump stated that "I've never said I'm a perfect person nor pretended to be someone that I'm not. I've said and done things I regret and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them." "Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologise," he added.
Trump went on to "pledge to be a better man tomorrow," promising that he would "never, ever let you down. Let's be honest we're living in the real world. This is nothing more than a distraction from the important issues we're facing today."
He then hit out at his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and her husband, former US President Bill Clinton, stating "Hillary Clinton and her kind have run our country into the ground. I've said some foolish things but, there's a big difference between words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women, and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims."
Footage was released late on Friday, first published by the Washington Post, capturing the Republican nominee talking in the presence of a 'hot mic', as he described how he used his celebrity to sexually engage with women. "And when you're a star, they let you do it," Trump was caught saying to NBC's Billy Bush, using a host of sexually lewd descriptions. After the video was released Speaker of the House Paul Ryan cancelled a Republican fundraising rally with the presidential hopeful, describing himself as sickened by what he had heard on the tape.
