Freelance journalist and Marine Corps veteran Austin Tice went missing in Syria on Aug. 13, 2012.
More than 1,000 days later, he remains missing, the only known American to still be held captive in the country.
The White House acknowledged the somber milestone on Tuesday, and urged those holding Tice captive to release him in the latest appeal.
The White House vowed to continue to "work tirelessly to bring Austin home to his parents, Debra and Marc, and his brothers and sisters, who have endured anguish and suffering since Austin’s abduction," and thanked the Czech government for their efforts to secure his release.
The Czech government has been functioning as a U.S. proxy in Syria since all embassy operations ceased in the war-torn nation.
