Buses departing from Athens arrived at the border town of Idomeni overnight Monday, carrying hundreds of migrants and refugees to the final train station before the Greek-Macedonian border. Police are at the site to instruct those heading north, with voluntary workers assiting with various provisions including medical support. The refugees hope to make their way through Macedonia and onwards to Western European countries including Germany and Austria. Up to 44,000 people have reportedly travelled through Macedonia in the past two months, but they rarely stay to apply for asylum and instead tend to make their way to northern Europe. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Greece has received 124,000 migrants and refugees this year, mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, with 50,000 people arriving in July alone.
