Russian war veterans and WWII survivors were honoured on the 70th anniversary of the victory of Nazi Germany, at the Russian embassy in Washington, Friday. The remembrance ceremony was one of many across the United States, with other events taking place in Boston, New York and Philadelphia. According to the Russian Embassy, there are up to 5,000 former citizens of the Soviet Union who are either veterans, former military workers or survivors of concentration camps, POW camps or the Siege of Leningrad. By order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, all 5,000 are to be presented with a medal. Diplomats will deliver medals to various social centres across the US to present medals to those who could not attend the official ceremonies. Earlier in the day, hundreds attended a ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, in which Russia's Ambassador to the United States, Sergei Ivanovich Kislyak, honoured the surviving veterans.
